SPIRITUALS
As a child, we had a family tradition: when thunderstorms appeared, windows were tightly shut, lights turned off, and curtains closed. The family members gathered in the living room to sing Negro spirituals by oil lanterns and candlelight. Everything had to be still and quiet until the singing began, as my great aunt and mother did a call-and-response as the children eagerly began singing.
I begin to imagine the people who wrote these incredible songs, with harmonies and melodies that were even pleasing to the enslaver. Why was it so magical, mysterious, yet spiritual? I was curious about the individuals from various parts of Africa who, despite being in bondage, created a rich genre of music filled with harmonies, melodies, and natural rhythms to help them endure their pain and suffering.
This music, “Negros Spirituals, A National Treasure,” is the foundation on which I wrote the book Abella—A Voice for the Voiceless. As the character "Abella" lends her unique singing gift from God to heal and help others, I hope that the music brings healing to everyone who listens.
Here’s a small sample from the 26 musical selections.
